Upper Mustang, once a forbidden kingdom closed to the outside world until 1992, is one of the most extraordinary and remote destinations in the Himalayas. With its Tibetan-influenced culture preserved virtually unchanged for centuries, dramatic red and ochre desert canyons, ancient cave monasteries and the walled capital of Lo Manthang, Upper Mustang is truly like nowhere else on earth. This restricted area requires a special permit and can only be visited with an organised trekking agency. The landscape — vast, windswept and otherworldly — is unlike anything else in Nepal, more reminiscent of Tibet than the green Himalayan valleys.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1

Fly Kathmandu to Pokhara to Jomsom (2,720m)

Two short scenic flights into the Kali Gandaki valley.

Day 2

Jomsom to Kagbeni (2,810m)

Enter Upper Mustang restricted zone. Ancient village and fortress.

Day 3

Kagbeni to Chele (3,050m)

Trek through dramatic eroded canyon landscapes.

Day 4

Chele to Syangboche (3,800m)

High plateau trekking with sweeping desert vistas.

Day 5

Syangboche to Ghami (3,520m)

Ancient mani walls and cave gompa visits.

Day 6

Ghami to Tsarang (3,560m)

Medieval fortress and red gompa of Tsarang.

Day 7

Tsarang to Lo Manthang (3,840m)

Arrive at the walled capital of the Kingdom of Lo.

Day 8

Explore Lo Manthang

King's palace, Jampa Gompa, Thubchen Gompa, Chhoede Gompa, cave monasteries.

Day 9

Lo Manthang to Dhakmar (3,820m)

Alternative return route through red cliffs.

Day 10

Dhakmar to Jomsom

Long descent back to Jomsom.

Day 11

Fly Jomsom to Pokhara

Morning flight, rest in Pokhara.

Day 12

Fly/Drive to Kathmandu, Departure

Return to Kathmandu and international departure.
