Rara Lake itself is known as the Queen of Lakes. It is the deepest and biggest freshwater lake in Nepal. Upon your arrival day, one of our Destination Himalaya airport representatives will come to pick you up. Do not worry about finding him; he’ll carry a dashboard of the company’s name and your name. Afterward, you’ll be transferred to the 4-star hotel by private car, if you have any other plans for the day, we are ready to assist you. If not, then you’ll be transferred to the hotel directly.
Please take some time to refresh and rest as in the evening we’ll have a short brief meeting regarding the tour with a cultural program at a fine dining Nepalese restaurant. Have a sound sleep as a fascinating excursion tomorrow awaits us
Today, we’ll proceed with the permits for the Rara Lake Trekking, In the morning the tour guide will come to pick up your original passport for arranging the permits. Have a fulfilling breakfast, as the day is quite a long day as we’ll be visiting the UNESCO world heritage sites within Kathmandu and Patan.
Firstly, our tour begins with a jeep/car drive to Kathmandu Durbar Square where we’ll explore the Hanuman Dhoka, courtyards, ancient temples, Kumari Ghar, museums, and many other mirthful places nearby. Then, we’ll set off to Swayambunath also known as “Monkey Temple” surrounded by forested territory widely where we can see monkeys mingling here and there. Ascending through the stone staircase, we get to see the busy “Kathmandu Valley” just below the high point.
Then, we’ll take a drive towards “Bouddhanath Stupa”, one of the largest stupas of Buddhism covering acres of land. It is also a hometown of the Tibetan refugees, where the local shops are run by them. Here, we can try tasty local Tibetan delicacies, then in the afternoon, we’ll head towards “Patan Durbar Square”- a living museum, surrounded by royal palaces, ancient temples, “Radha Krishna Mandir”, museums displaying the history and culture of Newari community.
After having a quick breakfast, we’ll take off for our flight from Kathmandu to Nepal located in Western Nepal near the border of India. Do not miss out on the breathtaking views gradually changing from hillside to mountain to lush green lovely valleys.
Upon reaching Nepalgunj, you can feel the chaos of the lowland area as it also serves as the way of transporting goods from and to India. We can just explore this area, strolling around the huge market and buying some handicrafts, and wood carvings here.
Bordering with India, it is also named “Terai”, where we can find Indians or even hear Indian languages while enjoying our rickshaw ride to our hotel. On this day, we’ll also visit “Bagheswori Temple” nearby and settle in at our standard hotel for tonight.
Starting our day with an early morning flight from Nepalgunj to Jumla, the aircraft shows us the best-ever views of the Himalayan range including the Sisne Himal, Kanjirowa Himal, Chhuchemara Peak, Dudu Kundari Himal, and many other notable peaks. As we land in Jumla, we can feel the peacefulness, completely different from the city area.
Strolling around the “Jumla Bazaar”: we can see ancient hamlets with slatted roofs all made in old-aged style. Even though many tourists are captivated by this Far Western region of Nepal, it remains totally out of development with zero modern influenced life. While wandering around this market, here we can see local children greeting us and waving hi showing us how frank and warm hospitality they hold. Make your best out of today while staying here at Jumla overnight.
Our first walking trail begins today, from Jumla so make yourself ready and be all geared up to explore an enchanting journey ahead! Beginning our hike, with the spectacular Dhaulagiri range, the route sets off following the Jugad Khola side by side. While ascending, we can feel an altitude rise however, the captivating scene of locals engaging in the terraced fields, where the yaks are grazing will make us forget our 5-6 hours hike.
Reaching the Khalang Bazaar means to market, we can see a unique insight completely different from Nepalgunj. Here, only basic requirements are sold like spices, apple delicacies, homegrown crops, and also products made with wood. Continuing the trek, the landscape starts to open up with close-up views of mountains including the Rara Himals. Enjoying the mesmerizing scenery, we’ll arrive at Chere Chaur where we’ll settle in for tonight.
Today, the day is quite challenging as we’ll cross over the highest altitude of the trek, Jaljala Pass so, make sure to have fulfilling water and carry quick snacks as there are no tea houses in between as well. Entering the densely forested area, covered with pine trees, thriving rhododendrons, and orchids, we will reach the Jaljala Pass at the height of 3580 meters, where the unhindered views of Jumla Himal including the Kanjirowa and Patarasi can be seen thundering at the sky.
Descending from here, we’ll again navigate through a short lovely forest from where the signboard marking the way can be witnessed. Going all the way downhill, we’ll finally reach Chala Chaur, surrounded by coniferous trees including pine and fir with the chirping sound of Himalayan birds.
Leaving Chala Chaur behind, today the route begins with entering the pine dense forest trail and agriculture farms of diverse settlements. Moving forward, we can witness the valley slightly opening with ancient hamlets covered with slatted roofs and wooden-styled structures that show the living proof of the ancient Khasa Kingdom, yes! We’ve just entered the Sinja Valley, the capital city of this kingdom that ruled till the 15th century.
Here, we’ll explore some of the temples, and monuments, and see the insight of cliffs engraved with the history of the “Khasa Kingdom”. Wandering around this village, we’ll be welcomed by the dance, and music played with flutes and Madal, wearing Royal Thakuri attires and jewels making our stay here truly meaningful.
Today, the trail sets off walking past the lovely green valley that slowly turns into agricultural farms of locals where we can see them engaging in harvesting millets, wheat, and mustards or planting it depending on the season. Persisting our way, we’ll attain “Laha village”, where the small community is all built up just like the 90’s style which means the settlements still remain the same passing by the inheritance and never facilitated.
Traversing through it, the roaring flow of Ghatte Khola and Sinja Khola accompany us, after arriving at Goru Singhe, we will show our permit and finally enter the protected area of Rara National Park. Staying overnight at Goru Singhe, we’ll immerse ourselves in the rich hospitality of Magar and Thakuri.
Today, the day has finally attained what we all have been waiting for! YES, as today we’ll trek to Rara Lake- the deepest and largest fresh lake water of Nepal. Starting our day, with an enchanting hike to Chuchhemara Danda -Hill Point, where the panorama vista of several mountains and the stunning Lake Rara fascinates us with their beauty.
Continuing our trail, we’ll enter the inner section of Rara National Park displaying its flora and fauna to us. Bird Watchers and Enthusiastic hikers, keep your focus along the route as we might encounter the elusive Red Panda and Himalayan Monal welcoming us to the wetland of the lake area.
At around 1:00 PM, we’ll arrive at Rara Lake so, we have enough time to wander around this pristine area and get enough time to mingle with locals and get some informative knowledge.
Make sure to make the best out of the excursion day as we’ll stay one more day here at Rara Lake. The morning displays an astonishing view of the mountains towering at clear skies, after having our warm breakfast, we’ll climb uphill to Murma View Point which is only 1.5 hours away.
Upon reaching the viewpoint at Murma, the breathtaking view of Rara Lake shining in the shade of blue can be seen. From where the shadow of pine trees along with Rara Himals and Jumla Himals can be witnessed at the lake showing the pristine lake being conserved at such a high altitude.
After we descend, we’ll have boating in Rara Lake for a few times glancing over the trout fish dwelling in the lake. Rest of the day, we’ll probe the Rara National Park territory and have some amazing conversations with the remote locals, they might have some amazing stories to share with us!

We’ll take some rest and explore this wide hamlet of locals and have a tea break. Navigating through this settlement, we’ll cross over the suspension bridge directing us to the village of Pina where we will be staying tonight.
Trek from Rara Lake to Pina (2400 m./7872 ft.), 6 hours
The trail today begins going downhill through dense forest that leads us to the checkpoint, abiding a goodbye to the area, we will walk along the Jhari Khola that leads us to Gamgadi, Gumgarhi the large settlement of Gurung and Magar communities.
We’ll take some rest and explore this wide hamlet of locals and have a tea break. Navigating through this settlement, we’ll cross over the suspension bridge directing us to the village of Pina where we will be staying tonight.
Today, we’ll go all the way downhill with several ascends and descends, the hike isn’t long-lasting but quite challenging as we cross over the Ghurchi La Pass.
Passing by several villages such as Chandannath, and Khalanga along with small water streams and fir trees, we’ll finally reach the village of Bumra.
Starting our trek along the Hima Khola (River) side by side, we will cross three suspension bridges en route that take us to hot spring- said to cure diseases and relax our muscles, a perfect way to soak in after those long days spent withing Mugu and Jumla district.
After having a short tea break, the pathway navigates through the Danphe Lagna Pass- 3600 meters, retracing the same route that we head by on the 1st hiking day, we will finally arrive at Jumla.
As we attain here quite a bit early in the day time, we’ve enough time to wander around the Jumla Bazaar as it is our last day within Far western region of Nepal.
Saying a heartfelt goodbye to the Mugu and Jumla district, we’ll catch an early morning flight from Jumla to Nepalgunj of 25 minutes. After we arrive at Nepalgunj airport, we will have some rest and fly back to Kathmandu ending our trek from Jumla to Rara Lake, a fascinating journey to be remembered forever.
After being transferred by the hotel, have some rest as we have a farewell dinner set for you where the trip completion certificate will be distributed as well.

It isn’t mandatory to hire a guide for the Rara Lake Trek unlike some of the restricted areas, however, it is highly suggested. As this trek goes through dense forest and crosses 3 high passes, the guide/assures you that you are safe and covers every corner of the Karnali region. Hence, the guide covers 3 major aspects firstly safety, secondly meaningful exploration and third immediate medical rescue (rare).
Our trekking guides are licensed, well-trained, and medically equipped in case of emergency for any trek in Nepal. So, you do not have to worry about anything, they are professional in speaking English, so language won’t be a barrier.
For the porters, you’ll get 1 strong porter for this Rara Lake Trekking, if you need one. The limitation of baggage is max. 25 kg that can be shared between 2 hikers.
Even though this Rara Lake Trek isn’t a dangerous expedition however it reaches an elevation of over 3000 meters after touching Chere Chaur so, the unfortunate risk of altitude sickness is always circulating around. Quick medical access isn’t available at the remote trails, the only immediate service is helicopter evacuation.
So, it is highly recommended to have travel insurance, just make sure it covers theft, luggage loss, minor injuries, and emergency airlift.
Even though, this trek might sound a bit strenuous as it covers 2 major districts: Mugu and Jumla within the Karnali Province there is nothing to stress about even if you are a beginner. This trek from Jumla to Rara Lake doesn’t include a long day of hiking, the maximum duration would be 5-6 hours of this trek. The risk of altitude sickness might be one of the things to be concerned but with proper guidelines, it can surely be neglected.
Nonetheless, this trek doesn’t demand any prior experience welcoming all the hikers to explore the Far western part of Nepal.
For this trek, usually, it depends on what transportation you are opting for. For instance, if you are planning to do this journey by aircraft, overland then it can be completed within just 4-5 days, a maximum of 7 days. However, as it is a combined trip from Jumla to Rara Lake, it takes a minimum of 12 days and can go up to 15 days.
Our itinerary is comprised of 14 days starting from and to Kathmandu with arrival dates keeping it slowly, so we can gradually adopt to the rising altitude that avoids the risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness).
To undertake this Jumla Rara Lake Trek, there are two permits necessary for this trek to get accessible to the restricted area of Lake Rara. Firstly, the Rara National Park Permit to enter the conservation area, and secondly, the TIMS CARD (Trekkers Information Management System). Here are the costs of these two permits mentioned below: Rara National Park Permit: It costs around USD 30 per person for foreigners and USD 10 for SAARC nationals. The permit fees directly go to preserve the wildlife and the pristine flora within this area.
Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS CARD): USD 20 for foreign residents, however, the permit fee is a bit low for the SAARC nationals costing approximately USD 8 per head.
Every tea house has the availability and service of a WIFI connection, so communication won’t be an issue. Meanwhile, being at the Rara Lake Trekking route there are almost 0 tea houses in between, so make sure to be prepared beforehand.
You can buy an NTC SIM Card in Kathmandu and use the data of 4 G to connect to the internet. It might not work well at the dense forested or upper trail but works okay just to give an emergency call.
